On the Origins of Monolingualism

It’s amazing that so many educated people in the US are still monolingual.

That’s not the case for most countries, where educated people speak more than one language, sometimes three or four.

Why wouldn’t someone want to be able to play around in two languages? It’s fun.

For example:

In Spanish mono means monkey.

So mono-lingual is to have the linguistic powers of a monkey.
