Why Should Amazon Tell Us What Books Are “Best”?

Check out this great response on CNN.com by poet and fiction writer Jay Parini, in regards to Amazon’s recent “100 Best Books” list.

It brings up a good question: Is Amazon.com the best source for book recommendations?  Wouldn’t a better choice for literary advice be the chair of your dissertation committee, or writers you admire, or the cute barista at Starbucks?

I mean, Amazon sells toilet paper and groceries.

 Leaving your book recommendations to Amazon.com is like leaving your CD choices to the available selection at the Wal-Mart in Marshall, MN.
